New Lifeword show – Outdoors With Shaun Merrell – premiers today!
Arkansan Shaun Merrell has lived more of his life outdoors than indoors. Whether it’s fishing, trapping, or hunting deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, or waterfowl, his love for the outdoors runs deep. Like most outdoorsmen he is also quite a storyteller, which sometimes means using visual aids like a snake or an alligator. Shaun has worked at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission almost twenty-four years and enjoys educating people and connecting them with the outdoors.
Lifeword team members met Shaun and his wife Yalanda, a former television anchor, in 2019 when she became a board member then began hosting mission:world.TV for Missions. Shaun has broadcast experience as well with a midday show called Wild Wednesday on KAIT in Jonesboro.
Shaun says, “When I’m outdoors, I can’t help but think about God’s creation, where there’s always something that can be applied to Christian life. For this show, I want to first of all spread the good news of the gospel while giving insight to things that are relevant to the Bible and to spiritual growth for believers.”
“I’ll also be telling stories and sharing tips and tricks from my outdoor experiences that may help someone who already loves nature. Or maybe encourage someone to go outdoors and understand that feeling of being in the woods to hear a turkey gobbling, or on a lake and see the bobber go up and down, or what it feels like to be on a deer stand and see a deer come into view. No matter what, I promise we’ll have a lot of fun along way!” The son of a BMA preacher, Shaun and his parents served in Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas churches. Currently a member of Highland Hills Missionary Baptist Church in Highland, Arkansas, he enjoys assisting with leading worship there and has served in other areas – such as youth ministry – throughout the years. The Merrell family (including son Hunter) trains Labrador and golden retrievers, a side job they enjoy very much. When he’s not working or at church, he’s likely in the woods or on the South Fork River near their home in Cherokee Village.
“Shaun is one of those rare finds. He is a creative, he’s funny and he has a story to tell. He uses his background as an expert in wildlife to share the gospel of Jesus with others, and we’re blessed to have him on our team.”
